Azikel Power Limited was licenced in 2015 for on-grid power generation for 500MW. The Azikel Power Plant Project is structured for Independent Power Plant (IPP). It is sited at Obunagha Gbarain, adjacent to Shell Petroleum Development Company Gas gathering facility, which has a daily gas production of more than 1.7 billion cubic feet. The first phase of Azikel Power generation includes construction of a combination of highly efficient, low-emission, open-cycle gas turbines, which are powered by gas and heavy fuel oils.
In line with the Nigerian Power Sector Reforms and Privatization, Azikel Power is streamlined to take advantage of the Nigerian Government Gas Master Plan that is promoting new gas-fired power plants to help reduce gas flaring and provide much-needed electricity generation for the region.
Azikel Power was incorporated in 2012 and competed in the government privatization of the first 10 IPPs in Nigeria. Azikel Power submitted a bid for a 240MW power plant, situated in Bayelsa. Unfortunately, the company came in second position and lost the bid. Upon the unsuccessful bid, Azikel Power launched the power generation investment in the pursuit of a greenfield licence for power generation with the subsequent award of 500MW on-grid power generation by President Muhammadu Buhari Administration in the last quarter of 2015.
The Project
Azikel Power’s 500 MW capacity, natural-gas-fired plant is being engineered to generate power by receiving its gas supply from the existing Nigerian Gas Company pipeline that was designed to carry 78.17 MMSCFD
Gas & Water Supply
Combined-cycle plants require more water than peaker plants. Typically, combined-cycle facilities such as the one planned for Azikel Power, the water through the cooling process multiple times to minimize water use.
Power Evacuation
The electric power from the first two GT generators and corresponding ST generator will be evacuated using step-up transformers to the new air-insulated 132kV substation “AZIKEL 1.”
Developmental Milestones
Azikel Power is a pioneer Private Power Plant Project in Bayelsa State with a size and design of 500MW and Simple and Combined-cycle combustion turbine respectively.
